Recent Successes at Sprowston Community High
We are committed to raising the achievement of every pupil and preparing them for life in all its fullness. Below is just a taste of recent successes at Sprowston Community High School.
-
We have been working hard to promote student leadership and have appointed 50 Year 11 to assist with the daily management of the school, such as helping to award the catering contract. - Year councils and a whole-school council have been set up and again are assisting with the running of the school.
- Students are having a say in how their school is being run and managed. They have been involved in the recruitment process of all new members of teaching staff. They have taken part in interview panels, tours with visitors and we have plans to use students during the intake process. This is raising the profile of student involvement and taking responsibility for their environment.
- We have set up an international student group that has links with a school in Tanzania. Money raised (over £3000 to date) has gone to provide laptops, PCs, school equipment, toiletries etc.
- Year 7 students have taken part in international competitions in modern foreign languages and earned certificates for poetry and speaking.
- Students from across the year groups have given numerous musical and acting performances both in and out of school that have been critically acclaimed.
- Year 9 and 10 students have taken part in Enterprise Days lead by the Norfolk Enterprise Network showcasing their buisiness, scientific and technological skills while coming up with solutions for topical problems and issues. There were some incredible 'Dragon's Den' style presentations and some fantastic business ideas.
- A group of 14 Year 8 students took the law into their own hands by attending the 'Norfolk Street Law Challenge' at the UEA. Devised and delivered by undergraduate Law students from the University, this unique opportunity enabled 12 schools from across the county to compete against each other, putting their knowledge and understanding of the British legal system on trial.
- Fifteen Year 8 students took part in a urban writing workshop combining art, drama, music and literature. Urban writing originated on the streets and in the cities. The workshop acted as an introduction to Hip Hop music and the powerful writing that can be created in this medium.
- Students from across Sprowston Community High School, in association with The Hall School and East Coast Truckers, took part in the Norwich Lord Mayor's Procession. After making all their decorations and costumes the school was awarded Runner Up prize in the Carnival Spirit category. Great fun was had by all.
- GCSE and A level Art, Media and Photography students publically exhibited their works in and exhibition held at St Margarets Art Gallery on St Benedict Street. The received numerous positive comments from members of the public on the amazingly high standard of work on display.
- Eleven students from years 10 and 7 got 'up close and personal' with players from Norwich City Football Club. The students interviewed three players; Darren Huckerby, Mickey Spillane and Kris Renton. The players faced the challenge of being interviewed on camera about their childhood, their current lives, training regimes, aspirations for the future and any advice they could give young people today. This was a fantastic experience and the students used the footage from the interviews to produce a DVD showing how football and NCFC can be an inspiration to young people.
