Introduction and Meet the Team

The Learning Zone - Home of the SEN Department

Faculty Aims:

  • To promote the inclusion of pupils on the SEN alert in the day-to-day life of the school by supporting their academic, social and emotional progress.
  • To raise expectations of staff and students.
  • To ensure SEN policies and practices are clearly understood by all staff as well as parents.
  • To pay regard to the requirements of the Code of Practice (2001).
  • To implement the school SEN policy.

The Learning Zone is the busy hub of the SEN department.  Here, we are concerned primarily with the inclusion of pupils on SEN alerts into school life. This is achieved through a number of means:

In the Learning Zone itself:

  • The assessment of students' needs, statement reviews, etc. are carried out.
  • The planning and delivery of 1:1 and small group work, boosting literacy, numeracy, language and social skills take place.
  • Individual work is delivered by teachers specialising in dyslexia and similiar difficulties.
  • Help with organisational skills is provided.
  • Regular visits by a wide range of outside professionals complement the work already done in the Learning Zone.  For example, educational psychologist, the school nurse, specialist teacher of the deaf, a specialist teacher of EAL, Connects and Co (for young carers), all work with students in school via the Learning Zone.
  • It is important for all staff to remember that we have an open door.  Any member of staff concerned about pupils with special needs in their class is welcome to come to the Learning Zone, where we will do our best to provide information and advice on how best to deal with such pupils.

In the classroom:

  • Our prime responsibility within the classroom is to those pupils with Statements of Educational Needs.  We are funded and required by law to provide support to these pupils for the amount of hours specified on their Statement.  We also have to - and we try our best to - provide support to those pupils who are needy, at School Action and School Action Plus but do not have Statements of Educational Needs.
