Interform Cross Country Competition 2012

Monday, 23 January 2012 08:40

Students were awarded certificates for showing the Olympic
spirit

Recently, all students in years 7, 8 and 9 took part in the annual Interform Cross Country Competition. The course is designed to test both the students' physical and mental toughness along with their capacity to function as part of a team.

Once again the competition was a tremendous success with the vast majority of students trying their hardest to collect as many bands as possible to contribute towards their forms total.

At the end of each race, additional certificates were awarded for those pupils who demonstrated the Olympic spirit by showing excellence in the way they competed, determination in the way in which they battled to achieve their best, or friendship by working well as part of a team and helping others.

The results of each competition will be announced soon.

Well done to all who took part and competed.

Year 9 Student Lewis Griggs is on the fast-track to success

Monday, 14 November 2011 00:00

Lewis Griggs surrounded by his trophies
Having only been competing for two
years Lewis Griggs has amassed
numerous trophies

For the past two years Year 9 student Lewis Griggs has been competing at Junior Grasstrack level Motorcross (MX), riding with the Junior Grasstrack and MX at Norwich New Stars Club at Frettenham.  Despite only doing it for two years he is amassing numerous trophies and medals and has a promising future in the sport, as his dad Steven explained.

“He has 1st, 2nd and 3rd trophies taking pride of place in his living room.  Lewis is very dedicated.  He watches as much of the sport on TV and YouTube as he can and even plays MX on his Xbox!  They race Grasstrack from April to September and he trains as much as the weather allows.  He would never miss training or a race day, even if he's hurt, he loves it so much.”

Steven went on to say that “Lewis has been riding various bikes since he was five.  He started with a quad bike and progressed onto 2 wheels a few years later, riding motocross just for fun.  I ride MX as well so I suppose I was the reason he started.  His younger brother rides too so it’s a real family affair.”

His mum Victoria says Lewis has a promising future in the sport and is very dedicated. She says “He even came back after a nasty BMX accident to ride grasstrack the day after his cast came off!  Very dedicated!"

With the possibility of Lewis progressing in the sport, his parents are committed to supporting Lewis.   “We are immensely proud of Lewis and that is why we put so much time, effort and money into it.”

“Hopefully next season Lewis will move up to the next group and ride a 250cc bike, which he has asked Santa for!  If all goes well for him and he continues to show promise, he could move onto Speedway which is the natural progression from Grasstrack.”

“Footie” Finance Day at Carrow Road

Friday, 01 April 2011 00:00

Year 10 students at Carrow Road Norwich

Financial and budgeting skills were put to the test for 15, Year 10 Economics students when they arrived at Carrow Road for a “Footie Finance Day”. Unknown to them, they were to become The Board of Norwich City Football Club for the day!

Having been split into 4 “Management Boards”, the first task ahead of each Board was to create the tallest tower using only a few sheets of paper, a pair of scissors and a metre strip of cellotape! Amazingly, structures grew and developed out of nowhere and the communication and ideas between board members, which were being judged by Aviva representatives, led to some impressive towers being built. Local MP Chloe Smith also joined in with the morning’s activities, offering help and hands on advice, demonstrated by climbing on to the table top to take responsibility for placing the last winning structural element to the tallest tower!

Teams battle it out to build towers

The next task for the “Boards” was to use brainstorming sessions to review revenue streams such as ticket sales, merchandise, TV rights and sponsorship sales, that Norwich City Football Club currently use to generate income, ordering them from biggest generator of income to the smallest. This set the foundations for the final Dragon’s Den style task which was to be judged, with results determining how much money each team would get to spend on their own “Football Team” for the afternoons “Championship League”.

Teams created a Power Point presentation to illustrate the innovative ideas they had come up with to generate extra income streams which the Club doesn’t already utilise. Presentations were scored on innovation, effectiveness of power point slides, strength of presentation and ultimately on their logic of spending!

Students produced some great ideas including a “1 night only – Oasis Reunion Gig”, a “Signature” designer footballers range of clothing, a Norwich City Sports Day, consisting of a sponsored boat race between Ipswich and Norwich City, followed by a sponsored Mascot Competition and finally,  a return to the old style mobile food, drink and memorabilia vendors, which pupils saw in a DVD presentation depicting the History of the Club.

Bottom right, Zach, Rachel, Saffron and Kieron get down to generating income
for Norwich City Football Club!

After lunch in the viewing area above Carrow Road’s hallowed turf, students were placed into their own Champions League, assuming roles of Player /Manager, Player/Coach, Captain, Star Player and Player.

In the rising heat of which must have been the hottest day of the year so far, Teams gallantly played rounds of matches against each other on the pitches at Carrow Park. Prior to the start of each match, Managers received a joker card, which they had to deal with, possibly affecting team performance or the financial situation of their club! With transfer windows between games, Managers had to take responsibility for bidding for players to increase their team’s success and manage their team’s financial situation.

Right, teams participate in their very own Champions League gaining income
for their Clubs by winning matches.

All Teams ended up winners on the day, with everyone financially budgeting to keep themselves out of the RED!  The day was a fantastic opportunity and experience for students who all gained a clear indication of what challenges are faced by professional Football Club’s!

A huge thanks to Aviva and the Community Sports Foundation who sponsored the event and made the day such an enjoyable one!
