Year 11 News Update

A Great Start

I would like to say a big WELL DONE to Year 11 for a great start to the Year. In our assembly a fortnight ago I set the whole year group 3 targets:

  • 94% attendance on average;
  • Less than 10 people to be sent out of lessons to the Inclusion Unit;
  • At least 20 staff to see me and say something positive about Year 11.

As Year 11 have met all of these targets they earned themselves a non uniform day to raise money for our Prom fund.  The non school uniform day was on Monday 3 October.   Well done!

Careers Fair and Sprowston Sixth Form

The whole of Year 11 attended the Careers Fair last week and it was a great success.
In September 2012 Sprowston will open the doors to its brand new Sixth Form. Information can be accessed on our school website: www.sprowstonhigh.org/sixthform.  Moving on after Year 11 can be a challenge and one that as a school we can help and support with.

Our new Sprowston Sixth Form is a superb option for post 16 education.  It is a centre that is able to offer an excellent learning opportunity for many reasons:

  • We offer a wide curriculum with over 30 ‘A’ Level subjects with proven success.  These include subjects currently studied at GCSE and many new ones, for example Economics, Law, Philosophy and Ethics, Classics, English, Media, Graphic Design, Sociology, Performing Arts, Computing and Further Maths. As a Specialist School for Performing Arts and Media we offer exciting opportunities in these subject areas.  For a full list visit www.sprowstonhigh.org/sixthform/curriculum
  • Our strong and experienced team of Sixth Form Tutors offer good pastoral support, which includes academic mentoring and support with career or higher education pathways.  Students receive individual support with their selection of universities or other higher education establishments and during the UCAS process.  Individual guidance is also provided when students are completing CVs, applying for jobs or training or contemplating a ‘gap year’.
  • Established trips to many UK universities to ensure that students are armed with the right facts about future careers and moving on to university. Employers are invited into the school to lead workshops offering further advice in a range of careers, including setting up in business.
  • We offer high quality teaching all on one site.  There will be no need to travel to different venues.  Highly qualified and enthusiastic subject specialists lead the teaching in each area and ensure students are supported to achieve their best possible exam results.
  • High academic expectations with a personalised Gifted and Talented programme with support from learning mentors and tutors.  We aim to challenge our most able students to ensure there are able to access the highest A Level results with a view to achieving a place at a top University.
  • To promote learning outside of the classroom we have established trips to overseas destinations such as Italy, Berlin, Paris and Iceland. Enriching field work opportunities take place in many subjects and students can attend lectures offered by universities or examination boards, which build on their work in the classroom.
  • Leadership opportunities include the Accredited Volunteering Qualification and our Senior Students Scheme, which can help support future UCAS or job applications.
  • A great range of social events are planned by students to develop an active student community.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to The Sprowston Community High School Sixth Form Open Evening held at school on Thursday 3 November 2011 between 7.00-9.00pm.  This will give you the opportunity to discuss with subject staff options that are being offered.

I will look forward to seeing you at our Open Evening.

Prom Fund Raising

We are working hard to arrange two fund raising events to help raise money for the Prom.

On Thursday 20 October 2011 a group of Year 11 students are hosting a Year 7 Disco at school. Make sure if you know anyone in Year 7 to make sure they buy a ticket from Charoltte Layt or Zoe Norman for £2.

On Wednesday 16 November 2011 Year 11 are organising the annual Prom Fashion Show.  This has been an incredibly exciting and successful event that has been held in school for the last 3 years.  We will see Prom fashions modelled by students and staff.  There will be music, refreshments and everything you need to have a great Prom! Please keep your diary clear for this evening! Students, parents, carers, grandparents, friends are all invited.  Tickets can be purchased via your child for £3 each or 2 tickets for £5. See you there!

Open Evening

I would like to say a big thank you to our team of prefects who gave up their evening to help support our Open Evening for Year 6 students. It helped make the night a great success.

A VERY busy half term for Year 11!!
