Year 10 Work Experience Evening

Friday, 27 January 2012 13:22

This was a well attended and vibrant event. The hall was full of interested and supportive parents keen to ask questions about the work experience process.

Liz Wood kicked off the evening with a review of the importance of the work experience process. This was followed up by Carley Irving outlining the actual process and showing the parents the helpyouchoose.org website which is the Norfolk Careers Portal as well as our own Careers Zone on the website.

Peter Sewell mentioned the 'raising of the participation age' which means that all our young people will need to stay in some sort of training/education until they are 17 years of age.  He also mentioned the work of the Year 10 Parents Focus group which next meets on 1 March at 9.30am. There will be a parents blog available on the Year 10 Parent Zone in the near future as well as the KS4 Curriculum Map.

Parents and their children then moved into the computer suites where they had the opportunity to complete a current CV, covering letter and look at the websites mentioned earlier in the evening.

I think everyone that attended got something valuable from the evening.

Hero paperboy saved Gran’s life

Tuesday, 17 January 2012 10:33

Nick Hall

A Year 10 student, Nick Hall came to the aid of Norwich grandmother Iris Cannell, 96, who had fallen on her doorstep.  Nick heard her calls for help while out delivering newspapers, and undoubtedly, Nick's quick thinking helped save her life.  He used his paperbag to prop her up in a seating position, covered her with his coat to keep her warm and wrapped his scarf around her feet and waited with her to the ambulance came.

Iris Cannell said “I’m sure he saved my life.  I think that should be made public so people are aware that there are nice young fellows out there - not all young people are hooligans”.  Nick said “I was just trying to keep her mind off the pain, as I could see that the leg injury was quite bad and she was holding her arm in a funny way!

Nick is featured on the Evening News website which can be viewed by clicking on this link.

Year 10 Work Experience Evening 25 January 2012

Monday, 09 January 2012 12:26

On the 25 January starting at 5.00pm until 6.30pm there will be a Year 10 Work Experience Evening.  This is an important opportunity for you to find out more about how the work experience process operates. Our work experience for Year 10 is from 25 June - 29 June 2012. During this week all Year 10 will be expected to attend a work placement. We have always found that the most worthwhile placements are those that the students have found and set up themselves. Many students have already contacted prospective employers.

This evening is to support this process, hopefully answer your concerns and queries and offer support and guidance. To make sure this is a practical event all Year 10 students attending will be expected to complete a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and Work Experience covering letter in specially designed workshops.

Please feel free to download and use the following guidance notes and templates if you would prefer to complete your CV and Work Experience covering letter at home.

It promises to be a useful event so please attend if you can.

Year 10 Parents' Evening - 16 January 2012

Tuesday, 13 December 2011 13:19

This is an important event for all Year 10 students and their parents where you can meet and discuss your child's progress. You will receive a Year 10 Autumn term report before the end of term. This should form the basis for your 5 minute discussions. Your child will be making appointments with their teachers as soon as we get back after Christmas.

If you are able to attend this important evening, please complete the sections contained in the booklet below, indicating the earliest time you can attend the first interview and the teachers you would like to see. This form should then be given to your son/daughter who will arrange the interviews with members of staff and return it to you for use on the evening. If you are unable to attend, we would be grateful if you could complete the relevant section within the booklet, which is available to download below, and return the whole letter to form tutors as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing all Year 10 parents at this event.

Year 10 embrace Operation Christmas Child

Wednesday, 02 November 2011 11:18

Christmas is a great time of celebration and affluence for us in Britain but for many parts of the world there is little to look forward to on Christmas morning for many children.

Thanks to the valiant efforts of Year 10 there will be lots of children opening a very special Christmas gift on the morning of 25th December all the way from Sprowston.

This year Mr Sewell set each tutor group the challenge of putting together 3 shoeboxes full of presents and hygiene items for delivery to children in Eastern Europe and Africa by Christmas. The forms also had to come up with £2.50 per box to cover costs of transport.

Sprowston students make a model survival capsule to keep alive an offshore worker

In the end over 40 boxes were made up. As you will see the boxes were carefully packed and wrapped with toys and gifts to suit a variety of ages and sex.

A fabulous effort by everyone

Well done.
