Collapsed Curriculum 2 and Years 12 & 13

Tuesday, 27 January 2009 14:21

On Tuesday 3rd February we will be holding our second Collapsed Curriculum Day for the academic year. The purpose of these days is in line with the new Government initiatives to raise opportunities for students to learn outside the normal constraints of the curriculum. Our focus at Sprowston is on increasing active and practical learning opportunities where students take ownership for their learning in cross curricular settings.

Year 12 will be experiencing a Health Awareness Day and will be participating in a variety of workshops and Year 13 will be working on extended private study or assisting in faculty areas.

Please note: due to unforeseen circumstances the planned Health Awareness Day for Year 12 has been cancelled. All Year 12 and Year 13 students will now be doing private study unless participating in the D&T workshops.

Sixth Form Charity week 2008

Tuesday, 02 December 2008 11:34

Starting Monday the 8th of December 2008 the Kett Sixth Form is hosting a week of special events in order to raise money for charity.

Monday

Monday on the main stage the Sixth Form is hosting a “Never Mind the Buzzcocks” style quiz. A team of teachers are against a team of Sixth Formers for the eternal bragging rights (well the bragging rights until the rematch next year). There will be collection buckets going round so make sure to bring money. Any donations will be gladly accepted.

Tuesday

A Year 12 versus Year 13 rugby match on the playing field will sort the men from the boys. And the consequences for the loosing team will be made very clear the following day!

Wednesday

If you like to see grown men suffering, then today is the day for you. The losing team from Tuesday’s rugby match are going to endure the pain of having their legs waxed. To watch this extravaganza you will need to bring money, and have a strong stomach. Be prepared for tears.

In the evening there is a band night and a rave night going on in the main hall. If you want any more information just check the posters that will be around the school.

Thursday

During the lunch break there will be 5 lucky Sixth Formers walking around the school, wearing giant cardboard boxes, which can be written on, drawn on, or even coloured in. Just be creative. The box people are taking buckets around with them, so make sure you remember that spare change.

Friday

For the end of the week extravaganza there will be a spectacular show featuring plenty of teachers in a musical show to end all shows. Be prepared for embarrassment, and some bruised egos.

Young Enterprise

Tuesday, 02 December 2008 11:42

Sixth Form Business students have set up their own company called PureXcellence. They have been busy selling shares to friends, family and teachers to start their business and so far have made a profit on their trading of over £70.

Watch out for PureXcellence selling refreshments at school productions, and contact the students if you’d like to become a shareholder in a company that will survive the ‘credit crunch’.

A Busy Sixth Form

Thursday, 20 November 2008 10:42

It’s a very busy time of year for our Sixth Form Students (when isn’t! it!) with the majority of Year 13 completing UCAS applications for university places for next year, Year 13 reports being completed followed by the Parents’ Evening on November 27th. The pressure is well and truly on for them to achieve the grades they need to gain the places they want.

In the midst of this, we are delighted that some of our Year 13’s took the lead in raising over £260 in addition to the non-uniform day in the whole school which was held on the 24th October in support of Breast Cancer Care. The Sixth Form were proudly sporting all manner of pink, from hair to shoes, pink cakes were baked, brought and swiftly bought at lunchtime and many of our students (and staff) contributed to the fundraising by paying for either one or nine nails to be painted pink, recognising the percentage of women directly affected by breast cancer. We also had a lively display outside the library inspired by the Radio Broadland campaign ‘bring a bra to work’. A huge thank you to the key players in this, and also to all the Sixth Form, staff and other students who upported the event in any way.

Sixth Form assemblies are on Wednesday mornings, it seemed appropriate on the 5th November to mark the momentous events that had unfolded in the early hours of the morning. Having personally felt quite moved by Barack Obama’s acceptance speech and played it to the Year 13’s in assembly, dwelling on the huge significance and potential impact of the American peoples’ choice, I am pleased to publish here the more down to earth and pragmatic response of one of the students.

Election? Haven’t they done that yet?

So it may have taken them about the same amount of time to complete an A level but America has finally held its election. On Tuesday November 4th (to use the American way of writing the date) over 130 million of our cousins across the pond stood up and gave their view on who they thought should be the next leader of their country, and ften in times of need, the world. And for those of you who don’t know, they chose the Democratic candidate Barack Obama.

This election is unlike any before. Not only because of the huge amount of people that turned up on the day, but the amount of money that was spent on persuading the merican public to ultimately choose to put a tick in one box instead of another. The two candidates have clocked up hundreds of air miles, said thousands of words and shook millions of hands just in the hope that they will become the 44th President of the United States of America.

If you weren’t one of the ones who stayed up late into the night glued to the telly or with head under the duvet secretly listening to BBC Radio Five Live’s coverage on something they are attempting to call ‘Medium Wave’ (its like FM but a bit crackly, it’ll never catch on) like I did, then I hope that over the next week, month or maybe next year when he finally becomes President, you have a look on the internet at how a small town enator became the embodiment of the hopes and dreams of an entire nation. But if you don’t, I wouldn’t worry too much, because it all starts again in a couple of year’s time and in the style of all American sequels, it will be both bigger and better.

Year 13 Student
