On the Allotments
Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:15
We have been very busy digging, digging and more digging, preparing the soil for this years crops. We have also sown an early crop of over-wintering broad beans, marked out our territory with kindling sticks and twine and set up a composting area. We are collecting compost materials from within the school and have set up compost collection points! The benefits of this are great:
- Composting keeps green waste out of landfill sites, which generate methane and contribute to global warming
- Making compost saves the school money and helps the environment by eliminating the need for chemical fertilisers
- Adding compost will improve our soil and make our plants more healthy
Thanks go to Chris Holmes, our Catering Manager and Wendy Fuller (Food Tech) whose enthusiasm and commitment to the composting scheme has got us off to a flying start. A big thank you to the students who make up our team of “Compost Collectors” and are responsible for collecting and emptying the compost caddies every week.
On wet winter Wednesdays we will be retreating to the library to plan the layout of our vegetables for the coming year. We are looking forward to a visit to Mousehold Garden Centre to plan and budget for our Spring purchases of seeds, seed potatoes, onion sets, bamboo canes etc.
Allotment Club is an outdoor activity held on Wednesday lunchtime. For further info please contact Mrs Leggett or Mrs Howes.
