World Cup Poster Competition May - July 2010

Friday, 09 July 2010 00:00

The World Cup Poster competition was designed to inspire young people to explore the arts and discuss cultural and global issues. We did this by:

  • looking at art work associated with the World Cup sporting event since its inception
  • discussing circumstances surrounding the hosting countries across the ages
  • analyzing  how each host country had chosen to represent themselves in each events official poster

We then invited all our community to have a go at creating their own “official poster”, either for the South Africa World Cup that took place this year or for an imaginary future event.

Well done to everyone who took part, the Specialist Status team were delighted by the number of wonderful entries from across our community.

The Specialist Status of Sprowston Community High School enables us to develop strong links with the whole community and across the curriculum. Our thanks goes to Mr Schamp for his ideas, resources, and enthusiasm which enabled this project to become a reality.

Sprowston Students on Offshore Survival Course

Monday, 12 July 2010 10:03

Four Sprowston Community High School students (Rachael B., Jessica S., Lauren C. and Jack M.) did exceptionally well to win a day at the PETANS offshore survival skills centre. The event was sponsored by OPITO and run by Camouflaged learning and hosted across Norfolk over several rounds with the final teams brief to construct an oil rig emergency escape device. The winning teams then got to try out their skills at survival for real in simulated helicopter ditching and fire-fighting drills.

A HUET drill is Helicopter Underwater Evacuation Training and involves being strapped into a simulator and plunged underwater. The idea is to give offshore workers the skills to survive a crash in the North Sea. Candidates must hold their breath, resist the temptation to panic, unbuckle their harness and then pull themselves out through the window and swim to the surface. If this is not hard enough, as helicopters are top heavy, the drill is done upside down underwater as a helicopter will roll on impact in rough seas. Rachael, Jessica, Lauren and Jack were understandably nervous but all completed the drill in outstanding fashion. Brilliant!

If you can overcome your fears, then the world really is your oyster!

Blue Moon Walk

Monday, 12 July 2010 08:19

Hi, my name is Rosie Van Raalte.  Having already been diagnosed with diabetes in late 2005, I was then diagnosed with osteosarcoma (primary bone cancer) in September 2008.  I underwent nine months of gruelling chemotherapy on the children’s ward at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge and also underwent a major operation at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore where the tumour was removed from my left arm and then reconstructed using bone from my left leg.

Despite having this difficulty in my life, I have realised how lucky I have been and want to help other young people in the future who are similarly faced with cancer.  Therefore, after jointly winning the Bernard Matthews Youth Award for Bravery back in February this year, which included £500, I decided to donate half of this to Teenage Cancer Trust.  To increase this amount I have organised the Blue Moon Walk – a fun filled charity walk around Norwich on Friday, 10th September between 8pm and 11pm to raise funds for the construction of the first Teenage Cancer Trust unit at Addenbrooke’s in Cambridge.  These units are so important because at the moment young people are either scattered on children’s wards or adult wards which each cater for completely different needs from those of teenagers.   To be able to be treated in an age appropriate environment is great because you can talk about your cancer and teenage worries with people of the same age who are in the same situation.

Please come and join me, my family, Darren Huckerby - ex Norwich City Football Superstar and Jackson Williams - Ultra Athlete on Friday 10th September and help us help young people facing cancer.

The Blue Moon Walk starts and finishes at the Forum, Norwich and is sponsored by the Darren Huckerby Trust.  There will be entertainment from The Garage, Taverham Brass Band, NYFC Gospel Choir, Stilt Walkers and lots more.  Also, SNYA radio with be broadcasting live and will be looking for walkers to come and talk to them live on air. For more information and to receive a registration form and pack you can contact me at the Blue Moon  Walk on 07570 893296, email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or visit our website www.bluemoonwalk.co.uk  where you can download a registration form.  Registration for adults is £10 and £5 for 18s and under.

Please come and help me raise lots of money for this great cause.

Playing For Success - North Walsham Rugby Club

Monday, 12 July 2010 11:15

10 Sprowston Community High School boys completed 10 weeks at the Tackle Learning Programme at North Walsham Rugby Club and their celebration event took place on July 8th and it was a celebration with variety.  These sessions took place on Thursdays after school and their aim was to improve basic skills.

The boys began by showing us the New Zealand All Blacks ‘Haka’ and then performed a ’Haka’ of their own which they had choreographed the previous week. This was followed by a five a side tag rugby game. Several of the boys are hoping to continue playing rugby with the club’s junior teams next year.

Each of the students then talked to the audience of parents and teachers about the work they had been doing, proudly showing their photographs of their dens; their cooking; their small fire making ; man hunt etc.  These tasks were all designed to help the group develop their communication, team work; literacy and numeracy skills as well as develop their confidence with ICT.

Finally, they all received a certificate and badges for their work.  Jack Slater won the rugby ball for the number of points he had gained for his effort and work over the ten week period but it seemed to me this was a group of “winners” who had all learned something about themselves by taking part and completing the programme.

Monday, 21 June 2010 00:00

We have just received the following short message from our colleagues travelling with a group of students as part of this year's Sprowston High Spanish trip:

"After a long, but smooth and uneventful, coach and ferry journey we arrived safely at 12:30pm (BST) in a warm and sunny Cantabria in Santander. Weather looks set to stay sunny for the rest of the week. Hotels are comfortable and everybody is settling in before spending the afternoon exploring. We have a lovely sea view and are dying to get in the swimming pool! Went through some fantastic scenery and we'll be exploring the area as the week goes on."
