Year 9 Parents' Evening - Monday 28 November 2011
Wednesday, 16 November 2011 08:54
The Year 9 Parents’ Consultation Evening will take place on Monday 28 November. I cannot overstate the importance of such events in terms of ensuring your child’s success and well-being at the school. I sincerely hope that either you or a supporting member of your family will be able to attend the evening.
The purpose of the Consultation Evening is to offer you the opportunity to speak to the various members of staff involved in your child’s education, to raise concerns and discuss progress. In addition to meeting your child’s subject teacher, you may also make additional appointments to meet with the associated Key Stage 3 staff for any specific concerns that can not be dealt with by the subject teachers.
Interviews are restricted to a maximum of 5 minutes and in order to ensure consistency, every member of staff will strive to adhere to this. If you have further concerns and feel that a 5 minutes interview will not suffice, please contact the school and request an alternative meeting with the member of staff in question.
Please do contact us if you have any physical disability concerns so we can address them and make arrangements. Thank you.
Please bring the Parent Consultation booklet, which can be downloaded using the link below, with you to the event. There is a questionnaire at the back of this book, which I would ask you to complete either before or during the evening. Your answers and comments will be treated in confidence and will be used to improve the running of the school. If you are unable to attend, simply complete the 'Return Information' form contained in the booklet below, and return this booklet to your child’s form tutor.

Year 9: Preparing for Options at Key Stage 4
Friday, 21 October 2011 07:46
At the end of this academic year the current Year 9 cohort will advance to the Key Stage 4 curriculum. At this stage in their academic studies the students will cease to follow a common education structure, but will instead embark upon the educational pathway of their choice.
As a change to previous years, an on-line options form which can be found on the school website (www.sprowstonhigh.org) must be completed to indicate your child’s preference choices. Paper copies will also be available from the school office upon request.
Making the right choice for your child is perhaps one of the most important factors that will determine their future career prospects. Not only will students be given the opportunity to select the subjects they wish to follow, but also the nature of the courses they will follow. The demands and expectations of the different qualification types (GCSE, BTEC and non-vocational courses) differ greatly and it is important that our students are correctly matched to the courses that suit their learning needs.
At Sprowston Community High School, we are proud of the support and guidance that we are able to offer as we strive together to ensure that every student is correctly guided and that you feel able to make sound judgements on the best course for your child.

Year 9 Challenging Homophobia
Wednesday, 20 July 2011 00:00

Collingsworth, guide Year 9 students through
a dance routine
I’d like to send a big thank you out to the 15 brave Year 9 students who attended the 'Challenging Homophobia' learning opportunity on Activities Day. They were thoughtful. They were creative. They worked hard.
Our guest for the day was Charity Folker, from Norwich Pride, who watched them work through a variety of tricky challenges and hot seated their sensitive questions at the end of the day. Ex Year 11 students Siobhan Collingsworth and Lauren Carman, guided the Year 9's through a wonderful dance routine to a new Mr A song, “Gay”, with Mr Arnander, Mr Bright and Miss Byles adding some funky moves. The CD of the song was produced by the very brilliant Mr Causon.
The whole day was filmed by budding Year 12 cinematographers Olivia Smith, Bethany Bull and Emily Dimas and it may yet become another O2 Learn video. It was a great opportunity for examining our prejudices and for challenging the stereotypes that some of us hold. A number of students were unwell and unable to attend the event. They missed a great learning opportunity!

Young Writers Mini-Sagas Competition
Wednesday, 27 April 2011 10:58
The contest is on as hundreds of students in Years 7, 8 and 9 English classes have entered the Young Writers Mini-Sagas Competition with the chance to have their work published and win up to £1,000 for the school.

A mini-saga is a condensed story that requires students to tell a riveting tale in no more than 50 words. Students took up the challenge in English lessons prior to Easter, enhancing their vocabulary and stretching their storytelling skills as they aimed to capture readers from the outset – and sometimes finish with a twist.
Congratulations to the top five entrants from our school:
Stan Clarke, Year 8
Aleesha Nabarro, Year 9
Tom Walpole, Year 8
Georgia Williams, Year 9
Curtis Wright, Year 9
Click to read their mini-sagas.
Special mention also goes to: Ashley Kirby, Rosie Branford, Amy Turner, Emily-Skye Lines, Samuel King, Dylan Calver and Connor Oldridge for top quality work.
Congratulations to all entrants. We wish you the best of luck, with our eyes on the top prize.

Year 9 Rewards Trip to Ellough Racetrack
Wednesday, 06 April 2011 12:49

A group of nine Year 9 students were taken by Mr Sewell and Mrs Winter to the Go-Kartin track at Ellough on Friday 25 March. All the students had gained the most Good News Slips since the start of the year, the pupils were Billie Bell, Howard Buckles, Connor Hewett, Ryan High, Morrighan Humpleby, Tasnima Lucky, Connor Oldridge, Shayla Pottle, Kahdiza Sikder.
The students were shown a safety video before being kitted up with their race suits, gloves and helmets. The opening laps were a bit hesitant and there were lots of wheel spins but everyone got the hang of it and were whizzing around the track. Shayla Pottle wins the award for the most improved during the afternoon. Conor Hewitt was the overall winner beating Mr Sewell by just over 1 second with the fastest lap time of the day. All the students had a fabulous time and enjoyed a late afternoon visit to McDonalds to round off the afternoon.

In 1st place Connor Hewett, 2nd place Mr Sewell
and 3rd place Connor Oldridge
We would like to thank the School Association for providing the funds for this reward trip.
