Theme of the Week - Fairtrade Fortnight

This week's whole school theme is 'Fairtrade Fortnight' What does this theme mean to you? How will you change your shopping habits?

Monday 7 March 2011

What do you think about when you go shopping? The look? A fair deal on the price? What about the people who produce the things you buy… should they get a fair deal too?

Fair Trade is all about making sure the people that grow or make the things we buy get a fair price for what they do.

Tuesday 8 March 2011

Often it is the people far away who grow foods, such as cocoa beans for your bar of chocolate, who are the ones who get the worst deal from what you buy. Instead, it is the big international companies and advertising agencies who take most of the profits.

Wednesday 9 March 2011

Most of the cocoa beans grown in Ghana are sent to the UK and other countries in Europe where they are made into chocolate. The price farmers receive for their cocoa beans is often very low.

Thursday 10 March 2011

Lucy and other farmers in her village used to have to sell their cocoa to the government for little money. Then other cocoa farmers in the same situation decided to get together and form their own company.
They called their company Kuapa Kokoo, which means "good cocoa farmer." Kuapa Kokoo pays all its farmers a fair price for their crop, in cash, and on time.

Friday 11 March 2011

The extra money that the farmers get from Fair Trade is put into projects that benefit the whole community. In Lucy's village of Fenaso Domeabra a new well has been built.
