School governors are responsible for helping to provide an environment in which a good quality education can be delivered.
They have an important part to play in upholding school standards and shaping the futures of the young people who will form the workforce and community of tomorrow.
School governors are people from the school’s community who wish to make a positive contribution to children’s education. Governors are the largest volunteer force in the county and help to uphold school standards through their three key roles of:
- setting strategic direction;
- ensuring accountability;
- monitoring and evaluating school performance.
School Profile
Following the passage of the Education Act 2005, governing bodies are no longer required to hold an annual meeting for parents or produce a governors' annual report to parents. The report has been replaced by the school profile, which is designed for schools to communicate with parents about the school's progress, priorities and performance. Profiles are completed and published online.
The latest school profile is now available for download>>

Governors Guide to the Law
The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) produce the Governors Guide to the Law. The guide tells governors what their legal responsibilities are and how these fit in with the responsibilities of the headteacher, the local authority and the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families. This Guide sets out the statutory requirements relating to governing body responsibilities. The explanatory text should be read alongside the Law and Guidance sections listed at the end of each chapter, and any information on governance provided by the local authority.
