Creative Partnerships Project

Year 7 students will be taking part in an exciting new project that is aimed at raising literacy through creative thinking and learning. The project directly relates to student voice as it is born entirely from their own wishes and desires for their school experience. Passing ownership over to a core group of around 20 pupils has led them to making decisions about which creative practitioners they would like to work with, and in bringing these together, the project has begun to take shape.

Through the course of this academic year this project will be delivered and the core group will have the opportunity to work with these creative professionals whilst the year group as a whole will each have varying kinds of interaction with the project.

We expect that the project will be a fantastic opportunity for our Year 7s to make their mark as they embark upon their time at Sprowston!

Shine Week 6 - 10th July 2009 - Celebrating Incredibly Talented Students

Wednesday, 15 July 2009 08:41

The Creative Partnerships group have been involved in many activities as part of their project this year. The 19 Year 7 students took part in storytelling, film-making, capoeira and sculpting and had a fantastic time at our feeder schools and the adventure park, BeWILDerwood.

As the project draws to a close, we have chosen to celebrate their talent by joining the Shine festivities. This means that you can view their video and details about the project if you visit www.shineweek.co.uk and search 'Sprowston High'.

Our Shine Event took place on Monday 6th July when we had a special assembly in recognition of the amazing success that the Creative Partnerships group had with their project. The whole of Year 7 (who were involved in creating the stories on February 3rd 2009) enjoyed watching the film that was made. Certificates and special treats were awarded to the group who should be really proud of themselves!

In addition to this, the Evening News chose our school's project to be the focus of Norfolk Shine 2009. Four students, Morrighan H., Leannan H., Justine P. and Sophie P. went to the Evening News photographic studios to take part in a professional photoshoot. This was featured on Wednesday 9th July in the Evening News and in related media coverage of Norfolk Shine events.

They truly are incredibly talented! Well done!

Local Press Reports on Sprowston High Creative Partnership Project

Monday, 25 May 2009 00:00

City Youngsters Capture a Spirit of Adventure

Youngsters at a city school teamed up with a Norfolk adventure park for a project aimed at bringing out their creative sides. Sprowston High School students have paid a number of visits to the BeWILDerwood adventure park in Hoveton, over the past few weeks as part of the Creative Partnerships initiative.

The themes of the project include speaking, listening and outdoor learning and aim to get children creatively enthused with a particular focus on literacy. The whole of year seven has been working on the project, writing stories which they will hang on a Fartree at the school and creating a BeWILDerboard, as well as devising dances and sculptures inspired by their experiences.

The children spent the day at the adventure park with filmmaker Rob Vaughan and storyteller Sue Squire to document their visit to BeWILDerwood. Teacher Edwina Harvey said:

“Since the children embarked on this project they have taken some of their stories into three local infant schools and honed their storytelling skills by reading them to groups of six and seven year olds. “It’s a wonderful experience and we are already seeing the children’s motivation and confidence increase.”

Creative Partnerships is delivered in 45 schools across Norfolk by the Norfolk and Norwich Festival. Norfolk schools are being invited to apply for 34 new Creative Partnerships opportunities for 2009-2010 later this month.

The Far Tree is Born

Wednesday, 11 February 2009 09:02

We were delighted with the fantastic levels of achievement and sense of enjoyment experienced on our most recent Collapsed Curriculum day held on the 3rd February.

On the day, the whole school was involved in a variety of learning opportunities to develop their skills in certain areas. Year 7 worked in collaboration with the Creative Partnership agency in order to develop their story writing skills. Students were treated to an assembly from a professional story teller who gave specific advice about creating stories for an audience. Previously, our feeder schools had completed questionnaires about their favourite types of stories, which helped inform our year 7 students planning. Each student created their own story on a large leaf which was then hung on a tree in the English area. Students practiced their story telling skills and voted on their favourite stories. Winning stories will be read to the feeder schools as the project continues.

Over three hundred stories are hung on the tree in the English area and can be read by all students. The following comments were made by students:

  • “It was an excellent day and I would love to do it again or something similar.”
  • “An excellent day. Very well planned. I loved the tree”.

Overall, we were very pleased by the attitude to learning displayed by students and the level of work produced. Students who were surveyed commented on the fact that they liked to have additional time to work on extended projects and enjoyed the practical and active learning opportunities they experienced. The following comments were made by students:

  • “Thank you for a good day. More days like this.”
  • “Thank you for organising a lovely day”.

We would like to thank all staff who helped to make the day such a success. Our next CC day is scheduled for 11 March 2009.

The making of the 'FarTree'

Wednesday, 04 February 2009 09:15

The collapsed curriculum day on February 3rd will be the start of the story writing process of the Creative Partnership Project which involves all Year 7 students in the creation of stories based around the fantasy worlds described in the book 'A Boggle at BeWILDerwood' by Tom Blofeld. Based on feedback on what the students wanted, the Creative partnership project was devised by Edwina Harvey and Kevin Hunn, our creative partner, to develop pupils' literary and creative thinking skills through story telling.

During the day a 'FarTree' will be constructed to act as a visual embodiment of the story writing process. Students' contributions from the day will be collected together and showcased on the tree.

The project will then continue with a smaller focus group of Year 7 students who will be working with a variety of artists to develop the theme further, working in partnership with feeder school students and visiting BeWILDerwood.

Many thanks to Edwina Harvey and all the staff who are involved in supporting this exciting and creative learning experience for our year 7 pupils.
