Community Film Festival
Animation and Film Project 2013
Following the success of our previous Sprowston Community Film Projects, involving students from Sprowston Community High School and our Cluster Schools, we are now planning a new series of film-making workshops. For 2013 we have chosen a literacy based theme called; ‘Bringing Words Alive’. Students from our feeder schools will have the chance to explore a variety of text, words and stories and bring their words and ideas alive in a fun and creative way using film and animation.

The screening showcased a wide variety of superb creative and media talent with films ranging from ‘How the inhabitants of Candy World learn about the spirit of the Olympics', to ‘A potted history of the Olympics Games from Stone Age to Space Age’.

Fusion - Sprowston Community Film Festival 2010

Our Specialist Performance Art and Media status enables us to support identified partner schools and community partners in their creation of films for the Sprowston Community Film Festival. This year we were keen to expand the learning for the young people involved in the partner school projects, so each of these projects fused the art of filmmaking with a wider learning aim that the children explored. Details the films that each of these projects inspired can be found below:
Woodland View Junior: 'The Water Cycle' - film maker: David Lloyd
Woodland view used their Fusion Project to improve achievement in Science. The children involved in the project used animation to learn about the water cycle and created a film that can be used to inspire other pupils.
Sprowston Junior: '3...2...1...Action' - film maker: Robert Vaughan
A light hearted, film guide to taking better photos. The children at Sprowston Junior learned all about photography and how to take interesting pictures then decided to use their newly learned skills to make a film guide for other children. They successfully brought two creative mediums together to work as one.
White Woman Lane: 'The Magic Fossil (Gorillas in love)' - film maker: Robert Vaughan
The children here took on the task of turning a piece of creative writing into a short film illustrated in a similar way to a children’s book. After learning loads about writing, the children painted some wonderful illustrations which became the centrepiece of their film.
Falcon: '3D Stories'- film maker: Robert Vaughan
Falcon decided to mix together 3d modelling with writing to see if either medium could influence the other and improve the final product. This is a documentary style film showing the project from start to finish... with some very interesting results.
Hall School: 'Teamwork'- film maker: Robert Vaughan
A short film showing the children of Badger class working together in many different ways. The film shows how by mixing together different abilities and talents, great results can follow.
Sprowston Heritage: 'Coming Together' - film maker: David Lloyd
Our community partners this year chose to explore the meaning of the word fusion and what it meant to them within the context of Sprowston community. The final film is an eclectic “coming together “of all they discovered. The lead community members involved in the creation of this years film were: John Mason, Ken Jones, John Poynter and Peter Sneddon.

Fusion Projects
Our Specialist Performance Art and Media status enables us to support identified partner schools and community partners in their creation of films for the festival. This year we were keen to expand the learning for the young people involved in the partner school projects, so each of these projects are fusing the art of filmmaking with a wider learning aim that the children are currently exploring…
Falcon Junior School
Eagles class at Falcon Junior School are exploring 3D media through the use of clay and are working on their writing skills. The pupils are learning the skills to make pots to contain short poems and stories that they have worked on during the sessions.
Hall School
Badgers class at Hall School will be looking at solving a problem through drama and will also use clay to connect with the project at Falcon.
Sprowston Junior School
The Art-X after school club at Sprowston Junior School have been learning about photographic composition and are now creating a short film to demonstrate what they have learnt about photography to other pupils.
White Woman Lane Junior School
A group of pupils from White Woman Lane Junior School are working on improving their writing skills and learning about their cultural environment. Their film will be a documentary of what they’ve learnt with voice over excerpts of the pupils reading some of their work.
Woodland View Junior School
Ms Ashford’s class at Woodland View Junior School are using animation to learn about the water cycle. The pupils have made a model of some mountains and animated clouds forming over the mountains. Their film will explain the process of the water cycle to other pupils.
Sprowston Heritage
Sprowston Heritage are a local community group and one of our identified community partners. They are looking at the theme of fusion through gatherings and meetings of people in the locality of Sprowston.
Pupils Premiere Films at City Cinema
Budding Stephen Spielbergs got the chance to see the films they have been busily making over the past few months on the big screen.
Films created by more than 60 children from Sprowston schools were shown at Hollywood Cinema in Norwich recently. It was part of the fourth community film festival, with pupils, friends and family attending.
Organised by Sprowston Community High School (SCHS), the film festival showcased the talents of pupils and the work developed through its specialist performing arts and media status. The theme for this year's event was “East meets East” and the younger pupils were given professional guidance by local filmmaker Robert Vaughan.
Margaret Quigley, arts director at SCHS, said: “I am delighted how far our school community has come in
working together to share and develop film making skills and media literacy. “From learning to make simple claymation figures, students and community members are now experimenting with more in depth media techniques to create green screen effect backgrounds and documentary style films of a high calibre.”
Twelve short films were shown and pupils from the high school gave out their very own awards, presenting all the younger children with certificates celebrating their hard work and creativity. Ms Quigley added: “I'm really proud of all the films produced this year, which show a diverse range of skills and interpretation and make this a truly intergenerational, multicultural project.”
The film festival was first launched in 2005 as a vehicle to share media skills and resources with the wider community and last year was the first time the films were screened at the cinema.

Fourth Sprowston Community Film Festival
Students will soon be seeing their film work shown at a major cinema in Norwich. Over sixty young people from five Sprowston schools have been busy making their own short films to show at this years’ Sprowston Community Film Festival. With the theme of “East meets East” set as the starting point for ideas, the pupils have been supported by local filmmaker Robert Vaughan to shoot and create films around this topic.
The project has also inspired contributions from older pupils and adults. Groups from the Sprowston Community High School have been working with both Robert and local animator David Lloyd, and David has also been working with adults from the Sprowston Community Film Group and the Chinese Community Methodist Church on their film, making this a truly intergenerational, multicultural project.

The films will be shown at the Film Festival, which is taking place at the Hollywood Cinema, Anglia Square on Thursday 30th April. Doors will open at 6:30pm, the event is free, but entrance is strictly by ticket only. Tickets are being distributed to everyone involved in the project and their families, but a small number of returns may be available from the 27th April.
If you are interested in attending the event, but are not due to receive a ticket, please contact the SCHS office on 01603 485266 and ask to speak to Debbie Jay or Olivia Dean.
