Our Year 8 students who have creatively designed, decorated and named our school Gorilla, IONA GORILLA, had a send off this week for Iona who will now go on display in Norwich City centre with over a 100 other gorillas as part of the GoGoGorillas sculpture trail. The trail organised by Wild in Art, who previously organised the Go Elephants in Norwich, will be open to the public from the 25th June. At the end of the 10 week parade many of the GoGoGorillas sculptures will be auctioned off to raise funds for Break and the Born Free Foundation. However, Iona will be safely returning to our school to go on permanent parade in Sprowston. Dance uprising at Sprowston High

Friday, 15 February 2013 11:53

At 1.00pm on St Valentine’s Day thousands of women across the country took part in a ‘dance uprising’ to support the campaign ‘1 Billion and rising’ in its quest to end violence against women.

Sprowston’s talented dancers from years, 7, 9 and 10 took part in a five minute dance routine in the dance studio at 1pm, mirroring similar events held at The Forum Library and other venues across the country.

All of the students (and lovely staff) participated to the best of their abilities learning some basic salsa steps to fast pace Latin rhythms. The five minutes was over far too quickly and many of the students stayed on through lunchtime to continue their dancing session!

Thanks to all of those who not only participated but helped organise and support the event.

Go Go Gorillas

Thursday, 17 January 2013 00:00

Here is a sneaky peak of Sprowston High's gorilla. Many of you will remember the Go Elephants project where many decorated life sized elephants were put on display around the city 3 years ago. Sprowston took part decorating a baby elephant which was displayed in the Castle Mall.

We are taking part again in the 'Wild in Art' and 'Break' project in 2013. This time gorillas will take over the city. Our gorilla has been decorated by year 8 Art and Literacy students over a two day period. The students were inspired to paint animals in the style of Tinga Tinga artists and to create animal poems using different poetry styles. They then decoupaged these to the surface of the gorilla.

Thanks go to all students and staff involved.

Norwich University College of the Arts to become University

Wednesday, 09 January 2013 14:35

Shortly before Christmas Norwich University College of the Arts (NUCA) had confirmation that their application to the Privy Council to be officially recognised as a university and to omit the college designation from their title has been accepted.  NUCA is one of ten Higher Education Institutions in the country to have met criteria to be awarded the 'University' title, and so, will become Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) and Norfolk's second university.

This is great news for all students - past, present and future. Later in the month the actor John Hurt CBE, a firm supporter of the university, will be installed as NUA’s first Chancellor.

There are a number of events on at the university throughout the year that may be of interest to staff and students:

For further information about NUCA visit their website at http://www.nuca.ac.uk/

Year 9 CC Day - Literacy and Creative Arts

Wednesday, 14 November 2012 00:00

Year 9 had a day of producing narrative collages combining both their literacy and art skills together to create a range of very interesting and creative final pieces.  Students were inspired by a range of different collage artists and by the autobiographical work of Roald Dahl.  Students wrote their own stories based on memories from the past or more recent events.  They were encouraged to use literacy conventions such as interesting adjectives and adverbs to make their work come to life visually.  Students then searched for images related to their text and combined the two together with paint and other art materials.

The day went very well with positive comments from both students and staff.  The work was of a very high standard.  Well done to the students and a big thank you to all staff who made the day possible.

Head of Art

Celebrating cultural diversity at Sprowston

Sunday, 04 November 2012 21:14

Students met Principal, a music producer and song writer, as part of the extended assemblies which focussed on celebrating culture and diversity.

Principal discussed growing up in London and the musical influences in his life including; music from England, The Middle East and the Caribbean, which were formative in developing his own musical style. Students really enjoyed listening to how Principal composed his own lyrics which he sung to popular reggae tunes and many students stayed behind after assembly to meet and talk to Principal about his work and experiences.

Pineapple Dance Studios thrill for Sprowston students

Monday, 16 July 2012 08:00

On Thursday 5 July 42 students ranging in age from 14 to 18 made the trip down to London to take part in a workshop at Pineapple Studios followed by the matinee performance of Billy Elliot the musical.

The journey to London went smoothly despite a small delay to allow the Olympic torch to come past! We reached our meeting point in London with minutes to spare and were met by our guide Rich and his Jack Russell Dilly, after a swift walk through Covent Garden we reached the Pineapple Dance studios and split into two groups for our workshops with past and present members of the cast from Billy Elliot.

The workshops were fast paced and engaging with students raising the bar on their effort and performance levels to try and match their professional coaches. The session was over before we knew it and the room were filled with happy but exhausted students!

Lunch was spent in Covent Garden, celebrity spotting and window shopping taking up most of the free time.  We then boarded our coach to head over to Victoria Palace for the matinee performance of Billy Elliot.  With fantastic seats in the stalls we settled down for over two hours of electrifying performances from the incredible young cast of performers. With laughs and tears we all sat spellbound through the performance.

Back onto the coach with a chorus of ‘Electricity’ ringing through our ears and through London past the Olympic park. Most of the journey home seemed to be spent by the students either singing or deciding what show they want to return to London to see next!

who plays Mr Braithwaite

This was a fantastic trip with all of the students behaving amazingly through the whole day, they all took the responsibility of a mixed site trip in a mature and calm manner and their fantastic attitude was noted on by our guide Rich (and Dilly) and our Billy Elliot cast members.
