Sprowston students come to the rescue of local resident

I met with 5 students on Monday to thank them on behalf of a resident of Cannerby Lane who they helped on their way to school last week. While walking to school they saw that a lady needed help after she had an accident outside her home. They stopped, phoned an ambulance and stayed with her until the paramedics arrived. The grateful resident sent a card of thanks for them, saying "they were very kind and calm, and the school and their parents should be very proud of them" - and we certainly are!! I also handed over a reward which the lady wished them to receive, along with a card of thanks each from myself. Mrs Hewitt, Head of Citizenship, pictured with the students, was very impressed with how the students handled the situation. The students are: Carly Wright, Charlotte Harboard, Rebecca Perry, Reece Pizey and Alfie Lowe.

I was so impressed with some Year 8 students' solo performing skills in music of "Walking in the Air" that I thought I would 'congratulate' them with a card and photograph opportunity, to celebrate their progress since Year 7! 'Well done' to all our Year 8 students who have made improvements in their music studies - you know who you are!

Students display the Olympic Spirit

Students were awarded certificates for displaying the Olympic spirit
Recently, all students in years 7, 8 and 9 took part in the annual Interform Cross Country Competition. The course is designed to test both the students' physical and mental toughness along with their capacity to function as part of a team.
Once again the competition was a tremendous success with the vast majority of students trying their hardest to collect as many bands as possible to contribute towards their forms total.
At the end of each race, additional certificates were awarded for those pupils who demonstrated the Olympic spirit by showing excellence in the way they competed, determination in the way in which they battled to achieve their best, or friendship by working well as part of a team and helping others.
The results of each competition will be announced soon.
Well done to all who took part and competed.
Hero paperboy saved Gran’s life

Nick Hall
A Year 10 student, Nick Hall came to the aid of Norwich grandmother Iris Cannell, 96, who had fallen on her doorstep. Nick heard her calls for help while out delivering newspapers, and undoubtedly, Nick's quick thinking helped save her life. He used his paperbag to prop her up in a seating position, covered her with his coat to keep her warm and wrapped his scarf around her feet and waited with her to the ambulance came.
Iris Cannell said “I’m sure he saved my life. I think that should be made public so people are aware that there are nice young fellows out there - not all young people are hooligans”. Nick said “I was just trying to keep her mind off the pain, as I could see that the leg injury was quite bad and she was holding her arm in a funny way!”

Year 6 Transition Quiz School Motto Competition

As part of the Transition to Sprowston Community High School students in Year 6 were asked to participate in a quiz about the school. The tie breaker question was to come up with a motto for students about to start at Sprowston. We were blown away by the quality of the suggestions for mottos that students came up with and Ms Wood was able to select a winning entry with an excellent motto.
Milly Purton at Sprowston Junior School came up with ‘A School’s job is to teach a pupil. A pupil’s job is to teach a school’.
Milly was awarded with an IPod Shuffle and certificate at Sprowston at the end of last term and we look forward to seeing Milly in September.

Year 7 students were taken on a tour of the stadium
On Wednesday 7 December, Year 7 boys from the ‘Double Club’ run by ‘Norwich City Football Cub eagerly awaited the arrival of the minibus to take them to Carrow Road for the day to celebrate the end of their 12 week course. The morning started with a challenge were the boys were asked to invent, analyse and market a product that they thought could be sold in the club shop to help towards reducing the clubs £15,000,000 debt. Sprowston Students Staggering Charity Donations
Sprowston Community High School community has raised a total of over £50000 for local and national charities and good causes in the past 5 years. The money, raised through a series of fundraising events and charity work led by Citizenship GCSE students, as part of their coursework, as well as the charity committee and year teams, has benefited almost 100 local, national and international charities.
Billie Bell, Chair of the Active Student Involvement Group at school added “It’s amazing to know that we have raised so much money in quite a short space of time. 2011 has been a great year for our charity work, with Year 10s raising over £5000 through Citizenship coursework and the rest of the school collecting massive amounts of money for various charities. We should be immensely proud of this momentous achievement. Well done to everyone! Keep up the good work. Next Step £100,000……………..!”
A “non-uniform” for “Children in Need”, in which both students, staff and governors participated, was the final event that broke the £50000 barrier. Other events raised further funding for Amnesty International, a charity that students actively embrace and that they are very keen to support...Read More
